This man, James Verone, robbed a bank for one dollar. Why only one dollar? Because he knew that in prison he could get the medical care he could not afford with his part time salary as a convenience store clerk. He was approved for food stamps, but they did little to help his finances. Between his back problems, carpel tunnel, and arthritis, he simply couldn’t handle the pain any longer.

On June 9th, he sent a letter to his local paper, the Gaston Gazette, that stated: “When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me. this robbery is being committed by me for one dollar. I am of sound mind but not so much sound body.”

He then took a cab to the RBC Bank, and handed the teller a note asking for one dollar and medical attention. He quietly took a seat in the lobby and waited for police to arrive.

Since Verone only stole one dollar, he was only charged with larceny. His bail, which he doesn’t plan to pay is set at $2,000, reduced from the normal $100,000. He’s scheduled to see a doctor this Friday, and hopes to get foot surgery, back surgery and to have a protrusion on his check treated.

To me, this is the perfect example of how disturbingly corrupt and unjust our health care system has become under HMO’s. For this man, or any person for that matter, feels that he needs to be imprisoned just to see a doctor, is ridiculous.

This is exactly what I hate about America. Why is it that you can buy an entire house with money you don’t have, but still can’t apply for health care if you don’t meet the requirements? That’s messed up.

Ya see, it’s not even so much when people make arguments and then anti-social justice blogs derail them. While it sucks to have your posts derailed by people with malicious intents, it happens. Because the internet. I wish it wouldn’t, but it happen. A lot. And that doesn’t make it any less horrible or upsetting or whatever, because it is; there is nothing worse than expressing yourself, your fears, your identity, or whatever, showing a trust in that others will respect you and treat you with decency, and then you are abused by strangers because they are apparently really offended by your attempt at seeking support. That is fucking horrible, and I have had entire weeks ruined by the very rude, insulting, and abusive remarks of others on this site.

But I think what really, REALLY bothers me is when I go on those blogs and see them literally just taking photos of people “about me” sections and yelling about “WOW WHAT A SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE!!!”

Like. Bro. Bro. Let me tell you a thing: Does it honestly really, REALLY matter if someone identifies as something you believe is illegitimate? Mind you, your belief that it is illegitimate doesn’t in fact make it illegitimate, so, please, don’t think your belief is absolutely or fact.

But if someone with a fandom/hipster/fashion/porn/random-fucking-ass blog put their sexuality or gender identity or manifesto or WHATEVER in their “about me” section, did you really, REALLY, REAALLLLLY need to go and document it so you can critique why their opinions of their own self are wrong? Really? Did you honestly have to do that?

The answer is no.

You did it because, I assume, you believe your desires and thoughts are more important than the wellbeing of others.

There are harmful things that people say that need to be discussed. But very rarely is a person’s personal identity any of your goddamn business. And, moreover, if a person wants to list off their personal identity in their “about me” section, it is obviously intended to find others who can relate to them, or to find people with likeminded views. Not you, person who opposes everything they stand for. This is like Superman being offended that someone used the Bat signal to summon Batman. It was not for Superman, and Superman needs to calm down. Unless it was shining into Superman’s window, it is not Superman’s concern.

Y’know why I put my sexuality in my “about me?” ~~Because it’s the point of this blog.~~ But no really: Because it’s a big part of my identity, and I want to find others with common experiences to talk to about said identity. Same reason I put my fandoms, or my taste in art: I want to find people who identify with the things I like and dislike. Maybe someone will one day read my “about me” page and be like, “OH SHIT THEY LIKE THE THINGS I LIKE OH MAN,” and fall madly in love with me. On some deep level, that might be why I subconsciously have the desire to have such an intricate about me page. Who the fuck knows.

I don’t know where this post is going; I’m quite tired from work.

Let’s try and rein this in:

Just respect other people enough to mock them in your mind. Or, if you really want to excelle in compassion, maybe attempt to understand why some people may use this site to seek the companionship and support of others.

I just read The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh and it renewed my interest in Victorian flower language. So now I’m looking up pictures of purple coneflower, fennel, and elderflower and plotting a tattoo design.

I really, really, really want a tattoo.

Also, random memory: my English teacher in high school had bookshelves lining the back wall of the classroom. I always started at the book about flower language, but could never work up the courage to ask to borrow it. Even though he was a very nice man… the book just seemed old and fragile and I ruin things.
