Students from Humboldt State University have taken plastic water bottles full of waste and used them in the construction of an addition of a school in the Dominican Republic. They also used old bike parts and newspaper to make a wind turbine. Just another way to repurpose trash.
lessons to be gleaned from this post:
- building Poor Third World Brown Kids™ schools out of garbage is awesome because it helps you get rid of trash (!!!!)
- low-income kids totes don’t already know how to make use of the tons of garbage that pollute their home communities, and lack any ingenuity to figure it out
- when white college kids make buildings out of trash, they’re fancy architecture; when low-income POC build homes out of garbage, they’re shanties (see: USAID & Haiti in this week’s Haitian news sources)
- building garbage schools for said Poor Third World Brown Kids™ is cooler and more exotic and saintlier than building schools for the kids in the communities within 50 miles of the university that desperately need schools (but they’re the kids of those nasty locals who live outside the university town, right? they’re mean because they don’t like college kids and are uneducated—but could that be because those college kids won’t build schools for them and have parents who refuse to pay adequate taxes or hold the state accountable for public education??)
- Poor Third World Brown Kids™ should count themselves lucky to have white college kids to come build garbage schools for them (even though the systemic issues due to oppression by white college kids won’t go away afterwards, ie lack of adequate teachers, lack of school supplies aka capitalism/colonialism)
- Poor Third World Brown Countries™ are there to be experimental grounds for white college kids to devise technology that is most likely offensive and a massive failure solely to boost their own neocolonial self-esteem/charity complex
- Poor Third World Brown Countries™ should be grateful for all the white college kids who come build garbage schools because they are so incapable of building and maintaining state infrastructure like public education because they are Poor Third World Brown Countries™ (and totes not because of capitalism and colonialism)
